Mataguay Trails System

To ensure proper stewardship of the land while maximizing program use, a new camp-wide trail system will be designed and developed.

Hiking Scouts

The Mataguay Trails System will feature two parallel "spine" trails that traverse the property. Branching trails will lead hikers to the Pardee Outpost Camp, rock outcroppings and lookout vistas, and a new link to the Pacific Crest Trail.

Main trails will be designed to accommodate a variety of users, from backpackers and runners to mountain bikers and equestrians. Branching trails and loops may be limited to specific users (hikers, for example) and will be built and marked as appropriate.

Trails will be designed to take advantage of the natural contours of the land. Trail construction will be in accordance with best methods using appropriate materials.

Trails to Adventure!

The Ranchlands Trailhead will originate at the Welcome Center. Day use parking and water will be available. Maps and information on the Mataguay Trails System will guide hikers across the Ranchlands creek toward the Pardee Outpost, or up one of the main spine trails that lead through camp.

The Parker Scout Camp Trailhead will begin at the Lake Dan Henry dam. Trailhead parking will be available at the old rock quarry site and informative signs will direct hikers north towards the Ranchlands or south through Parker towards high adventure trails and the retreat center.

The High Adventure Trailhead will originate at the barn and equestrian center. A small parking area will allow for day use or extended parking (for those linking to the Pacific Crest Trail). Signs will direct hikers and backpackers down the spine trails towards the Ranchlands, or up through the retreat center and on to the Pacific Crest Trail.

Bridges, footways, paths and vista points will be designed with an eye for adventure. Trails should inspire the imagination of a boy, crossing the creeks often and encouraging Scouts to "turn the corner" and enjoy the beauty of this special property.
